Aiden Markram was the star of the night when he scored 91 runs, but his dismissal opened the door for a comeback for Pakistan. Markram was dismissed in the 41st over, with South Africa needing 21 more runs to win and three wickets to spare. Over the next six innings, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim Jr kept the South African bowlers under pressure, with the former two taking both wickets. But when Wasim Jr. Playing his final over in the 47th over and Shaheen and Haris had already completed their spells, Keshav Maharaj had the opportunity to make some big shots and ended the game with a four against Mohammad Nawaz in the 48th over. on. Earlier, Babar won the toss and chose to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Marco Jansen stifled the batting early and dismissed both Pakistan openers. Shadab Khan and Saud Shakeel have since given Pakistan a boost with a counter-attacking partnership. The pair put on 84 runs from 71 balls before Shadab fell on 43 from 36 balls while Shakeel scored a half-century. Shakeel ended up falling for 52 with that many balls. Pakistan were all out for 270 in the end.

Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out with back spasms while captain Temba Bavuma has returned to South Africa. Pakistan, on the other hand, brought back Mohammad Nawaz instead of Usama Mir, Mohammad Wasim Jr. will play in place of the ill Hasan Ali. Both sides began their 2023 World Cup campaigns in similar fashion. Both teams won their first two matches by convincing margins before losing the third in rather spectacular fashion.

Pakistan lost to rivals and table toppers India, South Africa fell to the Netherlands in what remains the biggest upset of the tournament. Since then, however, the trajectories of both sides could not have been more different. South Africa beat England by 229 runs and Bangladesh by 149 runs. However, the wheels came off for Pakistan. They then lost to Australia by 62 and Afghanistan by eight wickets.
